Leal Wilcox on Yellowbelly Track

On 21 July 2024, American Lael Wilcox rode briefly on the Yellowbelly Track passing through Murchison. This was part of her women’s round-the-world record ride. Her world record time was 108 days, 12 hours and 12 mins.

This pic shows Leal coming through Murchison’s main street. I can report she didn’t stop and sample the local bakery goods. Perhaps her stay in Australia was too short to acquire the vanilla slice habit.

Her plan was to average 264 km per day in Australia. She wasn’t accompanied by support vehicles in this section.

Lael recently announced she plans to do the ride again starting June 2026. This time she hopes to break the men’s round-the-world record – which is 78 days. This is 30 days faster than her previous ride, although she wil have a support crew this time.

Lael will be riding through Australia again on this attempt. Although I am not sure if she will ride exactly the same route.
